To continue preparing us for the arrival of Oh Brother I thought I’d share this early demo I recently rediscovered of Everything is Permanent. (Hear me out…)
This voice memo was initially included with the Good Luck With Whatever batch of contenders. We even tried it as a full band when the session came around but we didn’t quite nail it. I eventually reworked the music (which is its own long story for another time) and we ended up with what you hear on Misadventures of Doomscroller.
For now, check it out in its embryonic state with just a baritone electric guitar and a vocal. Completely different riff, completely different changes, completely different melody.
And before I link it to the upcoming album, this is probably as good a time as any to give a shout out to my good pal Jimmy Joliff. He and I cowrote the lyrics for this one. I kinda forget who did what. It was a true mind meld. Go find Brother Reade or Champion Chills on Bandcamp or YouTube or wherever you can. His music is criminally under appreciated. I might be caught speaking in hyperbole from time to time, but he is easily one of if not the greatest lyricist I’ve ever had the pleasure of writing with. No one else could writes stanzas like this…
Now we’re on that downward eternity luge
Thoroughbred horse they need to turn into glue
Showing up in hell in my very best suit
Saying, ‘I don’t mean to be rude
But I was told there’d be food’
So now that all of that has been laid out, I hope you enjoy this recording. But (here’s the fun part) listen close because there is a fairly major component of this that ended up on a song off Oh Brother. I actually forgot all about it until I heard this again for the first time the other day. That’s all I’ll say for now. I just thought it would be fun to give you all a little something to look out for. Talk soon.
