How did the recent Lowell George tribute record come about? Was Sailin' Shoes selected for you, or vice versa? Really nice review here (https://www.covermesongs.com/2024/05/review-long-distance-love-a-sweet-relief-tribute-to-lowell-george.html), including this comment: "Another change of scenery comes for “Sailin’ Shoes,” which Taylor Goldsmith, mailman for Dawes, fills with N’Awlins atmospherics that encompasses both funeral marching band brass and a skittering rhythm. It is a further high point of this increasingly impressive album. "
We need another San Diego (or 2) show! I hurt my back right before the last one and had to leave before the end of the show due to severe pain. I'm still sad. But my back feels better!
Thanks for answering my question! (The “closest to the song” one...)
When I’m producing music for people who write their own songs, this is one of the first questions I ask them once we’re talking deeply. My chief concern with a songwriter is helping them make sure the album version is something they feel like is going to represent them at their most sincere level. It’s heartbreaking to me that the answer is almost never “the final product”when they’re talking about previous work. The afterglow of writing is overwhelmingly the most common and I just want all my artists to live in a world where they can carry that momentum into the master recording.
These posts are so generous and reveal why listening to Dawes is so compelling. TG's lyrics embody a fascinating blend of innocence (a potential) and wisdom (the product) much as the song is to the recording. Remaining a pluripotent stem cell is tantalizing and lies in tension with finalizing the definitive form. We're all 3 months from waiting tables and yet we're all already waiting tables in someone else's cafe.
Please “plop” more songs like that! In my business we call that “rolling” - you’re rolling [wtp] unused songs from one album to the next. Thank you for not going into wholesale insurance sales.

You are in Salt Lake on 3/19. What is the exact line up? Will Lee Pardini be on keyboards?

Love the Belly Up shows. I vote for the usual two at Belly Up with an outdoor show at UCSD’s Epstein Family Theater!

Be well!
Try to check out the Zappa Band at the Baked Potato in Feb! I think you would enjoy it. 4/6 ex Zappa band members. They’re great!

I hope we get to hear the AYFB Picture of a Man as part of that album's 10th anniversary release!
Now I can’t wait for the AYFB 10-year Anniversary edition with that version of Picture of a Man on it 😀
I could read these all day.
